Learning Outcome 1
Learning outcome 1 was very foreign to me, I rarely looked over and proofread my work before submitting it. I didn’t realize it but I was missing a crucial component of the writing process. Revising my work helped me strengthen my papers, making them flow smoother especially when it came to transitioning between paragraphs. I also reread my work to improve my word choice and build off of other ideas. Connecting the dots and finding room for personal experiences and real-world examples.
Connecting personally to my work allows me to connect with my readers which is why it is so important to revise my work and expand on claims that I make. Minor details that the reader can relate to captivate their attention and make them want to continue reading. In my second essay, I reworked several of my body paragraphs to expand on ideas and incorporate my personal experiences. At the begging of the third page in my third paragraph, I highlighted a point where I gave a simple example of everyday action. I connected that to a point David foster Wallace had made to question the world around you and explore what you may find to be unimportant information that might actually be useful.
Originally I hadn’t incorporated that small bit of dialog but it allowed my readers to connect with me. Take an example of something I do myself when I’m at work and use it in their own lives to relieve themselves of the monotony.
In my third essay which I revised a considerable amount, I broke down the messages of Cadogan and related their personal experiences and national events which occurred over the course of 2021. A major time of crisis I had spent sheltered in my room doing school from home and watching the news. I heard of several acts of racism acted out by officers of the law on the Black minority in America. Cadogan explained how his life had changed when he moved from Jamaica to America and I connected that with how my thoughts on policing in our country have changed.
I have learned to reread my work, I am able to make my readings sound smoother and more full. I can also come up with new concepts and ideas from rereading the previous examples I may have used. I have learned that revision to include more ideas and claims is the best way to extend and elaborate on my work.
