Project number three was connected to project number two, the same groups who made the UNE freshman Handbook carried on making theri own job descriptions. My group Fantastic Team Five made a job description for a position titled the Coordinator of College Marketing. The job outline consisted of five parts: a description of the position, two categories of responsibilities major and minor, as well as qualifications, and key competencies. The person who will fill this position is responsible for the sale of the UNE student handbook under any circumstances. They must manage a group to promote the handbook and make a powerpoint to present our handbook to other colleges and universities as a template which can be applied to any school.
Following the production of our job description we brought them into class and began preparing for interviews. Each person was responsible for making a series of questions from both the search committee’s perspective and the perspective of the interviewer. Everyone was also responsible for recalling past experiences which had serious consideration and influence. For example, I recalled my choice to give up hockey and go to a charter school without a hockey team. Although this was incredibly sad for me to give up a sport that I loved, it was a good decision on my part since Sturgis prepared me so well for my time in college.
In class we synchronized our thoughts and each group presented their best question to the class. This allowed the other students to get a better understanding of questions that could be asked during an interview. I appreciated this chance to recognize the questions that I should be expecting when I would be getting interviewed in the following classes. The class immediately before our first round of interviews was dedicated to making five categories to look for in a candidate and picking a scoring system. Each category would be scored 1-5, a total of 25 points can be achieved by a candidate. My group was tasked with defining the term leadership which was one of the categories that was being scored on. These definitions which we made gave the class a much needed perspective through the eyes of a search committee. Now I understand how my future bosses might be comparing me to other candidates.
As the very first interviewer in the first round of interviews I was quite intimidated but it didn’t stop me from making the most of the situation. The Rolling Clouds Interviewed me and I was first brought in by Evan. I did a lousy job of introducing myself to the search committee, as they did a lousy job of outlining the interview process and describing the next steps of the hiring process. I was happy to share my experiences of working with someone from a different background, as well as my experience being in a sales position. The background I had gave me confidence as well as the friendly faces on the other side of the table. Being the observer especially in the second round of interviews was in my opinion the most informative. Watching as groups and individuals falter was very helpful in showing me what common mistakes people make in the interview process. The process showed me what I need to improve upon personally and how I can be a better candidate for a search committee, and maybe someday be on a committee of professionals.
